Philip V of Spain

Philip V of Spain, born on December nineteenth, sixteen eighty-three, was a pivotal figure in European history, reigning as king from November first, seventeen hundred to January fourteenth, seventeen twenty-four, and again from September sixth, seventeen twenty-four until his death in seventeen forty-six. His reign, lasting a remarkable forty-five years, nine months, and eight days, stands as the longest in the history of the Spanish monarchy, surpassing that of Philip IV.

Born into the illustrious French House of Bourbon during the reign of his grandfather, King Louis XIV, Philip was the second son of Louis, Grand Dauphin. Initially, he was not expected to ascend to the throne, being third in line after his father and elder brother. However, the childless King Charles II of Spain named Philip as his heir in his will, leading to his unexpected accession as the first Spanish monarch of the House of Bourbon in seventeen hundred.

Philip's rise to power triggered the thirteen-year War of the Spanish Succession, a conflict that reshaped the political landscape of Europe. The war concluded with the Treaty of Utrecht, which confirmed his claim to the Spanish throne while preventing the unification of the French and Spanish crowns. Despite losing territories in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy, Spain maintained its vast New World empire during his reign.

In seventeen twenty-four, Philip abdicated in favor of his eldest son, Louis I, who tragically died later that same year, prompting Philip to reclaim the throne. His reign was marked by significant reforms, including the centralization of monarchical power and the suppression of regional privileges through the Nueva Planta decrees. His second wife, Elisabeth Farnese, played a crucial role in governance due to Philip's struggles with depression. Upon his death in seventeen forty-six, he was succeeded by his second son, Ferdinand VI.
