In nineteen ninety-five, Cocu transferred to PSV, where he celebrated significant success, including winning the KNVB Cup and the Eredivisie title in nineteen ninety-seven. His career took a notable turn when he joined Barcelona from nineteen ninety-eight to two thousand four, where he not only captained the team but also secured a La Liga title in nineteen ninety-nine and participated in two Champions League semi-finals. After returning to PSV for a second stint, he added three more Eredivisie titles to his accolades before concluding his playing career at Al Jazira.

Cocu's international career with the Netherlands began in nineteen ninety-six, and he represented his country in two World Cups and four European Championships. With one hundred and one caps, he ranks eighth in the list of most appearances for the Dutch national team, showcasing his versatility as a defensive playmaker and his ability to adapt to various positions on the field.

After retiring from professional play, Cocu returned to PSV as a youth coach and later as an assistant manager. Cocu briefly served as caretaker manager at PSV in two thousand twelve, leading the team to a KNVB Cup victory. In two thousand thirteen, he was officially appointed as the club's manager, where he enjoyed a successful five-year tenure, winning three league titles.
