Philomena

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Philomena

Philomena of Rome, believed to have been born around 10 January 291, is revered as a Greek virgin martyr whose legacy continues to inspire devotion. Her remains were discovered in the Catacomb of Priscilla on 24–25 May 1802, where an inscription on three tiles enclosing her tomb read, 'Pax Tecum Filumena,' translating to 'Peace be unto you, Philomena.' This inscription confirmed her name, derived from the Ancient Greek word 'philouménē,' meaning 'beloved.'

As the patron saint of babies, infants, and youth, Philomena is affectionately known as 'The Wonderworker.' Her remains were later relocated to Mugnano del Cardinale in 1805, where they became a focal point for widespread devotion. Numerous miracles have been attributed to her intercession, including the notable healing of Pauline Jaricot in 1835, which garnered significant attention.

From 1837 to 1961, her feast day was celebrated in various regional calendars, although it was never officially included in the General Roman Calendar. The 1920 edition of the Roman Missal acknowledged her under 11 August, indicating that the Mass for her was to be taken from the common of a virgin martyr, without any specific observance.

In the Coptic Orthodox Church, the feast of Saint Philomena is celebrated on 10 August, aligning with the Gregorian calendar's 4 Misra of the Coptic calendar. Her enduring legacy as a figure of faith and miraculous intercession continues to resonate with many.
