Phryne

Phryne, originally named Mnesarete, was an ancient Greek hetaira renowned for her beauty and influence. Hailing from Thespiae in Boeotia, she spent the majority of her life in Athens, where she transformed her humble beginnings into a life of wealth and prominence, becoming one of the richest women in Greece.

Her life is shrouded in mystery, but she is most famously remembered for her trial for impiety, where she was defended by the eloquent orator Hypereides. According to legend, she was acquitted after a dramatic display in which she bared her breasts to the jury, although the authenticity of this account remains uncertain.

Phryne's allure extended beyond her role as a courtesan; she was also an art model for celebrated artists such as Apelles and Praxiteles. The latter's renowned sculpture, the Aphrodite of Knidos, is said to have been inspired by her striking form.

Despite being overlooked during the Renaissance, Phryne's legacy experienced a resurgence in the late eighteenth century, becoming an international cultural icon. Her trial was immortalized in Jean-Léon Gérôme's 1861 painting, Phryne Before the Areopagus, which has influenced numerous artistic representations of her in literature, theatre, and film.
