Pier Gerlofs Donia, known as Grutte Pier, was a formidable figure in Frisian history, born in the year fourteen eighty. He was not only a farmer but also a rebel leader and pirate, earning a reputation that transcended his time. His nickname, which translates to 'Big Pier' in English, reflects his legendary stature and the strength that made him a symbol of resistance.

Much of what we know about Grutte Pier is steeped in legend. Descriptions from his contemporaries, such as Petrus Thaborita, paint a vivid picture of a man who was a 'tower of a fellow,' strong as an ox, with a dark complexion, broad shoulders, and a long black beard. His natural humor and charisma were overshadowed by the tragic events that transformed him into a fierce freedom fighter.

In fifteen fifteen, Pier faced a personal tragedy that would change the course of his life.
