Pierre Bayle

He is best known for his seminal work, the Historical and Critical Dictionary, which began publication in sixteen ninety-seven. A Huguenot by birth, Bayle fled to the Dutch Republic in sixteen eighty-one to escape religious persecution in France. His work not only challenged prevailing norms but also inspired future thinkers, including Leibniz, who responded to Bayle's ideas in his own Théodicée.
