Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Pierre Nkurunziza

Pierre Nkurunziza, born on December eighteenth, nineteen sixty-four, was a prominent Burundian politician and educator who rose to prominence as the ninth president of Burundi. His tenure lasted from two thousand five until his untimely death in two thousand twenty, making him the longest-serving president in the nation's history, with nearly fifteen years in office.

Hailing from a Hutu family in Bujumbura, Nkurunziza initially pursued a career in physical education before becoming embroiled in the political landscape during the Burundian Civil War. He emerged as a leader of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD–FDD) in two thousand one, which transitioned into a political party following the civil war's conclusion in January two thousand five. Nkurunziza was elected president by Parliament later that year.

During his first term, he implemented several popular policies aimed at rebuilding the state and fostering inter-ethnic compromise as outlined in the Arusha Accords. His efforts included the demobilization of the last Hutu rebel faction in two thousand eight. However, his second term, which began in two thousand ten, was marred by rising discontent and accusations of authoritarianism, particularly following his controversial decision to seek a third term in two thousand fifteen.

This decision sparked widespread unrest and a failed coup attempt, yet Nkurunziza managed to secure re-election amidst allegations of fraud. His later years in power were characterized by increasing isolation and repression of dissent, culminating in a disputed constitutional referendum in two thousand eighteen that extended term limits. Nkurunziza announced his intention to step down after his term ended in two thousand twenty, shortly before his death.

In the May two thousand twenty presidential election, he endorsed Évariste Ndayishimiye as his successor. Ndayishimiye won the election, but Nkurunziza passed away in June, just ahead of the planned transfer of power. While he is credited with rebuilding Burundi and initiating social programs, his legacy is complicated by his later authoritarian rule and human rights abuses.
