Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Pieter Bruegel the Elder, born around 1525, emerged as a pivotal figure in Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting. Renowned for his landscapes and peasant scenes, he was a trailblazer in genre painting, presenting these subjects on a grand scale. His innovative approach marked a departure from the traditional religious themes that dominated the art of his time.

After completing his training and traveling to Italy, Bruegel returned to Antwerp in 1555, where he became a prolific designer of prints for a leading publisher. By the late 1550s, he shifted his focus primarily to painting, producing a remarkable body of work in just over a decade before his untimely death in 1569, likely in his early forties.

Bruegel's influence extended far beyond his lifetime, shaping the trajectory of Dutch Golden Age painting and inspiring generations of artists in various fields, including literature and cinema. His painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, has been immortalized in W. H. Auden's poem 'Musée des Beaux Arts' and referenced by filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky and Lars von Trier.
