Pieter de Molijn

Pieter de Molijn, born on April sixth, sixteen ninety-five, was a distinguished figure in the Dutch Golden Age of art. With English roots and Flemish ancestry, he was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Austin Friars church in London. His father, Pieter de Moijn, hailed from Ghent, while his mother, Lynken van den Bossche, was from Brussels. The family's migration to the Netherlands is believed to have been motivated by work opportunities rather than religious persecution.

Little is documented about de Molijn's early artistic training, but it is speculated that he traveled to Italy, which was a common practice among artists of his time. In sixteen sixteen, he became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke, marking the beginning of his professional journey. He was a contemporary of Jacob Pinas and married Geertuyt Huygen de Bie. Following the death of his first wife, he remarried, with his second wife, Geertruyt de Roovere, being from Amsterdam.

De Molijn's artistic legacy includes a diverse range of works, primarily landscapes, but also genre pieces, marine scenes, portraits, and architectural studies. His style reflects the versatility typical of Italian-influenced artists of his era, who often engaged in various forms of artistic expression to sustain their livelihoods. It is suggested that he may have been a student of Esaias van de Velde and he, in turn, taught several notable students, including Gerard ter Borch the Elder, Jan Coelenbier, Allart van Everdingen, Christian de Hulst, and Anthony Molijn.
