Pietro da Cortona

Pietro da Cortona, born Pietro Berrettini on November first, sixteen ninety-six, was a prominent Italian Baroque painter and architect. Renowned for his contributions to the emergence of Roman Baroque architecture, he stood alongside notable contemporaries such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. His artistic prowess extended beyond painting, as he was also a skilled general contractor, draftsperson, and visual artist.

Primarily recognized for his breathtaking frescoed ceilings, Pietro's most celebrated work includes the magnificent vault of the salone, or main salon, of the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. His artistic journey took him mainly through Rome and Florence, where he executed extensive painting and decorative schemes for the illustrious Medici family and the Oratorian fathers at the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella.

While only a limited number of his architectural projects were realized, they remain distinctive and inventive, showcasing his unique vision and creativity. Pietro da Cortona's legacy as a key figure in Baroque art and architecture continues to inspire and captivate audiences today.
