Pio Laporte

Pio H. Laporte, born on September 1, 1878, in Verchères, Quebec, was a distinguished Canadian physician and politician who made significant contributions to the Province of New Brunswick. He pursued his medical education at Laval University in Quebec City and further honed his skills at the prestigious Paris School of Medicine in France.

In 1903, Laporte settled in Edmundston, New Brunswick, where he established a medical practice and became a vital member of the staff at the Hôtel-Dieu in nearby Saint-Basile. His commitment to community health and education led him to enter municipal politics, where he served as president of the local school board and later as the mayor of Edmundston.

In 1935, Laporte transitioned to provincial politics, successfully running as the Liberal Party candidate for the riding of Madawaska County in the thirty-eighth New Brunswick Legislative Assembly. Following his party's victory, Premier Allison Dysart appointed him as the Minister of Health and Labour, a role in which he continued to advocate for public health and welfare.

Tragically, Pio Laporte's life was cut short on July 29, 1939, when he died in an automobile accident while still in office. His legacy as a dedicated physician and public servant remains a significant part of New Brunswick's history.
