Her musical journey commenced in nineteen eighty-eight when she joined the local band Automatic Dlamini, where she showcased her talents as a vocalist, guitarist, and saxophonist. The band's frontman, John Parish, has remained a significant collaborator throughout her career.

In nineteen ninety-one, Harvey formed a trio under her own name, marking the beginning of her solo career. The trio released two critically acclaimed studio albums, Dry in nineteen ninety-two and Rid of Me in nineteen ninety-three, before disbanding. Following this, Harvey embarked on a successful solo career, releasing an impressive ten additional studio albums since nineteen ninety-five, collaborating with various artists including Parish, Rob Ellis, Mick Harvey, and Eric Drew Feldman, and working extensively with the renowned producer Flood.
