Pliny the Younger

Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, more commonly known as Pliny the Younger, was a prominent figure in Ancient Rome, born in the year sixty-one. Raised and educated under the guidance of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, he developed a keen intellect and a passion for writing that would define his legacy.

As a prolific author, Pliny penned three hundred sixty-nine letters, of which two hundred forty-seven have survived to this day. His correspondence includes one hundred twenty-one official letters directed to Emperor Trajan, providing invaluable insights into the dynamics between the imperial office and provincial governors during his time.

Pliny's career was marked by a steady ascent through various civil and military roles, known as the cursus honorum. He served as an imperial magistrate under Trajan and maintained friendships with notable contemporaries, including the historian Tacitus and the biographer Suetonius. His interactions with influential philosophers such as Artemidorus and Euphrates the Stoic further enriched his experiences, particularly during his tenure in Syria.
