Pope Adrian V

Pope Adrian V, born Ottobuono de' Fieschi around the years twelve ten to twelve twenty, served as the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Papal States for a brief period in the summer of twelve seventy-six. His papacy commenced on the eleventh of July and concluded with his death on the eighteenth of August, marking a short but significant chapter in the history of the Church.

Before ascending to the papacy, Adrian V was a skilled diplomat, having been appointed as an envoy by Pope Clement IV in May of twelve sixty-five. His mission to England was pivotal, as he successfully mediated disputes between King Henry III and his barons, showcasing his diplomatic acumen and commitment to peace.

Adrian V's election to the papacy followed the death of Innocent V, yet he faced the unfortunate fate of passing away from natural illness before he could be ordained as a priest. His legacy, though brief, is noted in literary works such as Dante's Divine Comedy, where he is depicted in the fifth terrace of Purgatorio, undergoing purification for the vice of avarice.
