Pope Alexander VII

Pope Alexander VII, born Fabio Chigi on 13 February 1599, served as the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 7 April 1655 until his death in May 1667. His early career was marked by various diplomatic roles within the Holy See, culminating in his ordination as a priest in 1634 and his appointment as bishop of Nardo in 1635. In 1652, he transitioned to the bishopric of Imola, and the following year, he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Innocent X, who also appointed him as secretary of state in 1651.

Initially, Alexander VII maintained a simple lifestyle and adhered to an anti-nepotism stance during the early years of his papacy. However, as time progressed, his relatives began to secure positions within his administration, which ultimately influenced its direction. His administration was characterized by a strong support for the Jesuits, although relations with France became increasingly strained due to conflicts with French diplomats.

Beyond his political and ecclesiastical duties, Alexander VII had a keen interest in architecture and urban development in Rome. He was a patron of the arts, commissioning works that enhanced the decoration of churches. His theological writings included significant discussions on heliocentrism and the Immaculate Conception, reflecting his engagement with contemporary scientific and religious debates.
