Pope Alexander VIII

Pope Alexander VIII, born Pietro Vito Ottoboni on April 22, 1610, served as the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Papal States from October 6, 1689, until his death on February 1, 1691. He remains notable as the most recent pope to adopt the pontifical name 'Alexander.'

During his papacy, Alexander VIII made significant departures from the policies of his predecessor, Innocent XI. He embraced nepotism, which led to the enrichment of his family at the expense of the papal treasury. This indulgence in favoritism ultimately strained the financial resources of the papacy, compelling his successor, Innocent XII, to implement strict measures to restore the papal coffers.

Despite the brevity of his papacy, Alexander VIII's tenure was marked by a few notable actions. He condemned the doctrines of philosophical sin that were being propagated in schools operated by the Society of Jesus. Additionally, his papacy coincided with a significant diplomatic event when King Louis XIV of France returned Avignon to the Holy See, reestablishing it as a territory of the Papal States.
