Pope Anastasius III

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Pope Anastasius III

Pope Anastasius III served as the bishop of Rome and the ruler of the Papal States from April nine hundred eleven until his death. Born in Rome, he was associated with a noble lineage, with some sources suggesting that Lucian, a Roman nobleman, was his father. However, there are claims that he may have been the illegitimate son of his predecessor, Pope Sergius III.

His papacy is notably marked by the influence of Theophylact I of Tusculum and Theodora, who played significant roles in the political landscape of Rome during this period. Despite the limited records of his reign, it is known that under his leadership, the Normans of Rollo were evangelized, marking a significant moment in the spread of Christianity.

During his time, Pope Anastasius III faced renewed threats from the Saracens, who had established a presence along the Garigliano river. This period was fraught with challenges, yet he managed to navigate the complexities of his papal duties.

Upon his death, Pope Anastasius III was laid to rest in the revered St. Peter's Basilica, a testament to his role in the history of the Catholic Church and the Papal States.
