A native of Rome, Benedict IV was the son of Mammalus and was ordained as a priest by Pope Formosus. He succeeded Pope John IX and quickly made his mark by excommunicating Count Baldwin II of Flanders for the heinous act of murdering Archbishop Fulk of Reims in nine hundred. This bold move underscored his commitment to justice and the moral authority of the Church.

In nine hundred one, Benedict crowned Louis the Blind as emperor, a significant act that reinforced the connection between the papacy and the imperial authority in the region.
