Pope Benedict XI

Pope Benedict XI, born Nicola Boccasini in 1240 in Treviso, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, serving as its head and the ruler of the Papal States from 22 October 1303 until his death on 7 July 1304.

His early life was marked by a deep commitment to the Order of Preachers, where he entered in his hometown. Boccasini pursued his studies in Venice and Milan, eventually becoming a respected teacher in various Dominican houses. His leadership skills shone through as he served two terms as Provincial Prior of Lombardy, culminating in his election as Master of the Order in 1296.

In 1298, he was elevated to the cardinalate and appointed Bishop of Ostia. His diplomatic skills were further recognized when he served as papal legate to Hungary and France. Notably, he was present with Pope Boniface VIII during the infamous attack by French forces at Anagni.

After his passing, Pope Benedict XI was beatified, with his cultus confirmed by Pope Clement XII in 1736. He remains a revered patron of Treviso, remembered for his contributions to the Church and his enduring legacy.
