Pope Benedict XII

Pope Benedict XII, born Jacques Fournier in 1285, served as the head of the Catholic Church from December 30, 1334, until his death on April 25, 1342. As the third Avignon pope, he was known for his commitment to reforming monastic orders and his staunch opposition to nepotism within the Church.

During his papacy, Benedict XII faced significant challenges, including the inability to relocate the papal capital to Rome or Bologna. Instead, he initiated the construction of a grand palace in Avignon, which became a symbol of his reign. His theological contributions included the resolution of the beatific vision controversy initiated by Pope John XXII, articulated in the bull Benedictus Deus, which affirmed that souls could achieve the fullness of the beatific vision prior to the Last Judgment.

Despite his diplomatic efforts to reconcile with Emperor Louis IV and restore the Holy Roman Empire's allegiance to papal authority, Benedict XII was ultimately unsuccessful in this endeavor. His tenure was marked by a dedication to the Church's spiritual integrity and governance, leaving a lasting impact on the papacy.
