Pope Benedict XV, born on November twenty-first, eighteen fifty-four, served as the head of the Catholic Church from nineteen fourteen until his passing in January nineteen twenty-two. His papacy unfolded against the backdrop of World War I, a conflict he described as 'the suicide of civilized Europe.' Elected at the relatively young age of fifty-nine, he faced the daunting challenge of leading the Church during a time of unprecedented turmoil.
From the outset of the war, Benedict XV declared the neutrality of the Holy See and sought to mediate peace in nineteen sixteen and nineteen seventeen. Unfortunately, his diplomatic efforts were met with resistance; both sides of the conflict dismissed his initiatives, with German Protestants finding the notion of a 'Papal Peace' insulting and French leaders viewing it as anti-French. In light of these setbacks, he redirected his focus towards humanitarian efforts, working tirelessly to alleviate the suffering caused by the war through initiatives such as attending to prisoners of war and facilitating the exchange of wounded soldiers.
In nineteen seventeen, he promulgated the Code of Canon Law, a significant achievement that revitalized religious life within the Church. This new code, developed in collaboration with Eugenio Pacelli and Pietro Gasparri, was released on May twenty-seventh and is credited with stimulating various religious activities. Additionally, Benedict XV improved relations with Italy, allowing Catholic politicians to engage in national politics, and he worked to mend the strained relationship with France, which was restored in nineteen twenty-one.
As the war concluded, Benedict XV turned his attention to the emerging persecution of the Catholic Church in Soviet Russia and the resulting famine. His commitment to global Catholic missions earned him the title of 'Pope of Missions,' as he encouraged worldwide participation in these efforts. A devoted follower of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he also authorized the Feast of Mary, Mediatrix of all Graces. After seven years of dedicated service, Pope Benedict XV passed away on January twenty-second, nineteen twenty-two, after a battle with pneumonia, and was laid to rest in the grottoes of Saint Peter's Basilica.
