Pope Boniface VI

Pope Boniface VI, a native of Rome, ascended to the papacy in April of 896, following the tumultuous aftermath of Pope Formosus's death. His election was marked by riots, reflecting the chaotic political landscape of the time. Boniface's tenure as the bishop of Rome was notably brief, lasting only fifteen days, during which he faced significant challenges and controversies.

Before his short-lived papacy, Boniface VI had a troubled history within the Church, having been subjected to two sentences of deprivation of orders, first as a subdeacon and later as a priest. This troubled past cast a shadow over his brief reign, which ended under mysterious circumstances. Some accounts suggest he succumbed to gout, while others claim he was forcibly removed to make way for Stephen VI, a candidate favored by the Spoletan faction.

The papal historian Caesar Baronius characterized Boniface VI in stark terms, labeling him a 'disgusting monster' and accusing him of serious moral failings, including adultery and homicide. Such allegations contributed to the perception of his papacy as one of the more controversial periods in the history of the Church.

In 898, a synod convened by John IX declared Boniface's election null and void, further solidifying the contentious legacy of his brief rule. Despite the lack of extensive documentation regarding his life, it is believed that he was the son of a bishop named Adrian, suggesting a familial connection to the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
