Pope Callixtus III

Pope Callixtus III, born Alonso de Borja on December thirty-first, thirteen seventy-eight, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, serving as its head and the ruler of the Papal States from April eighth, fourteen fifty-five until his death in August fourteen fifty-eight. His early career was marked by his role as a professor of law at the University of Lleida, where he laid the groundwork for his future endeavors in diplomacy.

Throughout his life, Borgia was deeply involved in the political landscape of his time, serving as a diplomat for the kings of Aragon. His influence grew when he became a tutor to King Alfonso V's illegitimate son, Ferdinand. His efforts in reconciling Alfonso with Pope Martin V led to his appointment as Bishop of Valencia, further solidifying his position within the Church.

In fourteen forty-four, Pope Eugene IV elevated him to the rank of cardinal, allowing him to join the Roman Curia. One of his notable contributions during his papacy was the initiation of the custom of ringing bells at midday during the siege of Belgrade in fourteen fifty-six, a practice that continues today as the Angelus noon bell in many Catholic churches. Additionally, he played a crucial role in the retrial of Joan of Arc, which ultimately vindicated her legacy.

Pope Callixtus III was also known for his familial connections, appointing two of his nephews as cardinals, one of whom would later become Pope Alexander VI. He remains the last pope to adopt the name 'Callixtus,' leaving a lasting impact on the Church and its traditions.
