Pope Clement III

Pope Clement III, originally named Paolo Scolari, served as the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Papal States from December nineteen eighty-seven until his death on March twentieth, one thousand one hundred ninety-one. His papacy was marked by significant political maneuvering, particularly in his efforts to reconcile the Papacy with the city of Rome.

One of Clement's notable achievements was the resolution of the long-standing conflict between the Papacy and Rome. By permitting the election of magistrates, he successfully reinstated the Papacy in the city after a six-year period of exile, thereby restoring stability and governance.

Faced with a diminished college of cardinals, Clement III took decisive action by creating thirty-one new cardinals over the course of three years, a notable increase that had not been seen since the papacy of Adrian IV. This expansion of the cardinalate was crucial for the Church's future leadership and influence.

His tenure came to an end with his death on March twentieth, one thousand one hundred ninety-one, after which he was succeeded by Celestine III. Clement III's legacy is remembered for his efforts to strengthen the Papacy and reestablish its authority in Rome.
