Pope Clement XIII

Pope Clement XIII, born Carlo della Torre di Rezzonico on 7 March 1693, served as the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Papal States from 6 July 1758 until his death on 2 February 1769. His installation as pope took place on 16 July 1758, marking the beginning of a significant pontificate.

Throughout his tenure, Clement XIII faced immense pressure to suppress the Society of Jesus. However, he emerged as a staunch defender of the Jesuits, advocating for their order during a time of considerable opposition. His commitment to their cause distinguished him as one of the most notable popes in their history.

In addition to his support for the Jesuits, Clement XIII was one of the few early popes who sought to engage in dialogue with Protestant communities. He aimed to heal the schism that had developed between the Catholic Church and various Protestant factions, particularly in England and the Low Countries. Despite his efforts, these initiatives yielded limited success.
