Pope Damasus I

Pope Damasus I, born around three hundred five, served as the bishop of Rome from October three hundred sixty-six until his death on December eleventh, three hundred eighty-four. His papacy was marked by significant contributions to the Catholic Church, including presiding over the pivotal Council of Rome in three hundred eighty-two, which established the official canon of sacred scripture.

Throughout his tenure, Damasus was a staunch opponent of various heresies, such as Apollinarianism and Macedonianism, thereby reinforcing the faith of the Catholic Church. He was instrumental in promoting the Vulgate Bible, providing unwavering support to Jerome in this monumental task. Additionally, Damasus played a crucial role in reconciling the Church of Rome with the Church of Antioch and actively encouraged the veneration of martyrs.

In addition to his ecclesiastical duties, Damasus was a prolific writer and poet, known for his Latin verse and various prose letters. His epitaph for a young girl named Projecta has garnered scholarly interest, particularly due to its connection to the Projecta Casket housed in the British Museum. Alan Cameron has described this work as a collection of clichés and tags, skillfully woven into verse.
