Pope Dioscorus I of Alexandria

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Pope Dioscorus I of Alexandria

Dioscorus I of Alexandria, also known as Dioscorus the Great, was a prominent figure in the early Christian church, serving as the pope of Alexandria and the patriarch of the See of St. Mark. Born in the year three hundred ninety, he rose to prominence within the Coptic Church, where he was recognized as patriarch until his death.

His tenure was marked by significant theological disputes, culminating in his deposition by the Council of Chalcedon in four hundred fifty-one. Despite this setback, Dioscorus remained a revered leader within the Coptic community, and his legacy continued to influence the church long after his removal.

Dioscorus I passed away in September of four hundred fifty-four in Gangra, Paphlagonia. His contributions to the church and his steadfastness in the face of adversity have led to his veneration as a saint by both the Coptic and other Oriental Orthodox Churches.
