His pontificate is sometimes dated differently, with alternative timelines suggesting he led from one hundred seventy-one to one hundred eighty-five or from one hundred seventy-seven to one hundred ninety-three.

Venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, Eleutherius is remembered not only for his leadership but also for the legends that surround his life. One notable tale recounts his receipt of a letter from Lucius, the King of Britain, highlighting the early connections between the Roman Church and distant lands.
