Pope Eugene II

Pope Eugene II, born in the year seven hundred eighty, served as the bishop of Rome and the ruler of the Papal States from June sixth, eight hundred twenty-four until his death on August twenty-seventh, eight hundred twenty-seven. A native of Rome, he was selected by the local nobility to succeed Pope Paschal I, despite the preference of the clergy and the populace for Zinzinnus. This selection marked a significant moment in the establishment of the Carolingian Franks' influence over papal appointments.

During his papacy, Pope Eugene II convened a notable council in Rome in the year eight hundred twenty-six. This council aimed to address the issues of simony and the suspension of untrained clergy, reflecting his commitment to reform within the Church. One of the key outcomes of this council was the decree to establish schools at cathedral churches and other locations, promoting education in both sacred and secular literature.

Although Pope Eugene II's involvement in the Byzantine Iconoclasm controversy was largely inconsequential, his tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen the Church's moral and educational foundations.
