Pope Gregory XII

Pope Gregory XII, born Angelo Corraro around the year 1327, served as the head of the Catholic Church from 30 November 1406 until his resignation on 4 July 1415. His papacy unfolded during a tumultuous period known as the Western Schism, a time marked by division within the Church.

During his reign, Gregory XII faced significant challenges, notably the presence of rival claimants to the papacy. He was opposed by Benedict XIII, who resided in Avignon, as well as the Pisan claimants Alexander V and John XXIII. These competing factions created a complex landscape for Gregory as he sought to restore unity to the Church.

Despite the pressures of his position, Gregory XII was committed to the idea of unification. In a remarkable act of leadership, he voluntarily resigned in 1415, a decision aimed at ending the schism that had plagued the Church for years. His resignation was a pivotal moment in the history of the papacy, reflecting both his dedication to the Church and the challenges of his time.
