Pope Gregory XVI

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Pope Gregory XVI

Pope Gregory XVI, born on September eighteenth, seventeen sixty-five, served as the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from February second, eighteen thirty-one until his death in June eighteen forty-six. He entered the religious order of the Camaldolese, adopting the name Mauro, and became notable for being the most recent pope to take the pontifical name 'Gregory'.

Throughout his pontificate, Gregory XVI was characterized by his reactionary tendencies, opposing democratic and modernizing reforms both within the Papal States and across Europe. He viewed these movements as veils for liberalism and laicism, and he sought to reinforce the religious and political authority of the papacy, a stance known as ultramontanism.

In his encyclical Mirari vos, he famously declared it 'false and absurd, or rather mad, that we must secure and guarantee to each one liberty of conscience'. Despite his conservative views, he was an advocate for missionary activities abroad and took a strong stance against the slave trade, which was increasingly being suppressed during his time.
