Pope Honorius I

Pope Honorius I, born in the year five hundred eighty-five, served as the bishop of Rome from his consecration on 27 October 625 until his death. His papacy was marked by a strong commitment to the Christianisation of the Anglo-Saxons, a mission he actively supported by sending Saint Birinus to convert the West Saxons. Additionally, he played a significant role in bestowing the pallium on the archbishops of York and Canterbury, further solidifying the Roman Church's influence in Britain.

Honorius I was also deeply involved in ecclesiastical matters beyond the British Isles. He worked diligently to persuade the Irish and British churches to adopt the Roman Easter computus, showcasing his dedication to unifying Christian practices across regions. His correspondence with Patriarch Sergius I of Constantinople is particularly notable, as it engaged with the Monoenergism controversy and the associated Monothelite doctrines, which would later define much of his legacy.

Despite his efforts, Honorius I faced significant posthumous condemnation. The Third Council of Constantinople in six hundred eighty-one anathematized him for his alignment with the Monothelites and for endorsing their doctrines. This condemnation was later reaffirmed by Pope Leo II, who criticized Honorius for not extinguishing the heresy during his papacy. The anathema against Honorius I became a pivotal argument for opponents of papal infallibility during the First Vatican Council in eighteen seventy.
