Pope Innocent II

Pope Innocent II, born Gregorio Papareschi in the year one thousand one hundred, served as the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Papal States from February fourteenth, one thousand one hundred thirty until his death on September twenty-fourth, one thousand one hundred forty-three. His papacy began amidst controversy, as his election was contested, leading to a significant power struggle during the initial years of his reign.

Innocent II faced formidable opposition from the supporters of Anacletus II, which defined the first eight years of his leadership. However, he adeptly navigated the political landscape by forging an alliance with King Lothair III of Germany. This partnership proved crucial, as Lothair not only supported Innocent's claim to the papacy but also received the honor of being crowned Holy Roman Emperor by him.

Throughout his papacy, Innocent II was instrumental in convening the Second Council of the Lateran, a significant event that aimed to address various issues within the Church and reaffirm its authority.
