Pope Innocent IV

Pope Innocent IV, born Sinibaldo Fieschi around the year 1195 in Genoa, emerged as a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, serving as its head and the ruler of the Papal States from June twenty-five, twelve forty-three until his death on December seventh, twelve fifty-four.

Fieschi's academic journey took him through the esteemed universities of Parma and Bologna, where he gained recognition as a distinguished canonist. His reputation led him to the Roman Curia, where he was called upon by Pope Honorius III. In twelve thirty-five, Pope Gregory IX elevated him to the rank of cardinal and appointed him as the governor of Ancona.

Upon his election as pope in twelve forty-three, Fieschi adopted the name Innocent IV. His papacy was marked by significant challenges, including an ongoing conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor over territorial disputes. In a bid to escape the political turmoil in Rome, he sought refuge in France the following year, returning only after the death of Emperor Frederick II in twelve fifty.

One of Innocent IV's most controversial actions came on May fifteenth, twelve fifty-two, when he issued the bull Ad extirpanda, which sanctioned the use of torture against heretics, equating them with ordinary criminals. This decision reflected the turbulent and often violent context of his papacy.
