Pope Martin IV

Pope Martin IV, born Simon de Brion around the year 1210, served as the head of the Catholic Church from February twenty-second, 1281, until his death on March twenty-eighth, 1285. He was the last French pope to maintain his court in Rome before the papacy transitioned to Avignon, marking a significant period in the history of the Church.

Before ascending to the papacy, Simon de Brion was a distinguished French cleric, having held the position of chancellor to Louis IX of France. His elevation to cardinal came in 1261 under Pope Urban IV, setting the stage for his future leadership. His papacy was characterized by a close alliance with Charles of Anjou, whom he appointed as Senator of Rome, and was fraught with political strife.

One of the notable events during Martin IV's papacy was the excommunication of Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos, which effectively dismantled the fragile union between the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches that had been established at the Second Council of Lyon in 1274. Additionally, he confronted the Sicilian Vespers uprising and excommunicated Peter III of Aragon, declaring a crusade against him in a bid to preserve Angevin control over Sicily.

Due to the political turmoil and hostility in Rome and Orvieto, Martin IV spent a considerable portion of his papacy outside the city. His life came to an end in Perugia in the year 1285, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the complexities of Church politics and the challenges of his time.
