Pope Urban V

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Pope Urban V

Pope Urban V, born in the year 1310, served as the head of the Catholic Church from 28 September 1362 until his passing on 19 December 1370. A dedicated member of the Order of Saint Benedict, he holds the distinction of being the only Avignon pope to be beatified.

Throughout his papacy, Urban V remained committed to the principles of the Benedictine Rule, leading a life characterized by simplicity and modesty. This lifestyle often put him at odds with his ecclesiastical peers, who were more accustomed to opulence and luxury.

Urban V was a fervent advocate for reform within the Church, and his tenure saw significant efforts in the restoration and construction of churches and monasteries. One of his primary aspirations upon ascending to the papacy was to achieve the reunion of the Eastern and Western Churches, a goal he pursued with determination, coming closer than many of his predecessors and successors, yet ultimately not succeeding.
