Pope Victor III

Pope Victor III, born Dauferio Epifani Del Zotto around the year 1026, served as the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from May twenty-fourth, one thousand eighty-six until his death on September sixteenth, one thousand eighty-seven. He succeeded Pope Gregory VII and is notably recognized as the most recent lawfully elected pope to adopt the pontifical name 'Victor.'

Before ascending to the papacy, Victor III held the esteemed position of abbot at the renowned monastery of Montecassino, where he was known by his monastic name, Desiderius. His tenure in this role was marked by significant contributions to the church and the monastic community, establishing a legacy that would precede his papal election.

Despite his earlier accomplishments, Victor III's papacy was characterized by a less impactful presence. His declining health played a crucial role in his reluctance to accept the papal election, a concern that became evident during his coronation ceremony when he fell ill. This deterioration limited his ability to influence the church during a pivotal time in its history.
