Poros

Poros is a picturesque island-pair located in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf, approximately fifty-eight kilometers south of the bustling port of Piraeus. This charming destination is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow sea channel measuring two hundred meters wide, with the town of Galatas situated on the mainland directly across the strait.

Covering an area of about thirty-one square kilometers, Poros is home to three thousand two hundred sixty-one residents as of twenty twenty-one. The island's ancient name, Pogon, reflects its rich history. Like many other ports in the Saronic Gulf, Poros has become a favored weekend getaway for Athenians seeking a brief escape from city life.

The island consists of two distinct parts: Sphaeria, the southern section of volcanic origin where the modern city is located, and Kalaureia, the northern and larger part, known for its gentle breezes. A bridge elegantly connects these two islands over a narrow strait, enhancing accessibility for visitors.

Poros boasts lush vegetation, with the northern and far eastern/western sides characterized by bushy landscapes, while the southern and central regions are adorned with expansive old pine forests. The island features a well-developed road network and sufficient tourist infrastructure, making it an ideal resort for short holidays.
