Poundmaker

Poundmaker, born in 1842, was a prominent traditional leader and chief of the Plains Cree. He played a significant role in the history of Indigenous resistance in Canada, particularly during the tumultuous period of the North-West Rebellion in 1885.

During the rebellion, Poundmaker's band faced a violent confrontation with Canadian troops, leading to a fierce battle. Following the suppression of the rebellion, he made the difficult decision to surrender. Unfortunately, this act of leadership resulted in his conviction for treason, and he was subsequently imprisoned.

Poundmaker's health deteriorated during his time in prison, and he passed away shortly after his release. His legacy, however, endured, and in May 2019, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally exonerated him, offering an apology to the Poundmaker Cree Nation for the injustices he faced.
