He rose to prominence as the twenty-ninth prime minister of Thailand after orchestrating a coup d'état in May two thousand fourteen, which led to the establishment of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). His tenure as prime minister lasted until two thousand twenty-three, during which he also held the position of minister of defense from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-three.

Before his political ascent, Prayut served as the commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army from two thousand ten to two thousand fourteen. His military career was marked by a reputation as a royalist and a staunch opponent of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He was known for his hardline stance during the military crackdowns on the Red Shirt demonstrations in April two thousand nine and April to May two thousand ten, although he later attempted to soften his image by engaging with the families of victims from the conflicts.
