Prochorus (deacon)

Prochorus, a prominent figure in early Christianity, was one of the Seven Deacons selected to serve the poor within the Christian community of Jerusalem, as noted in the Acts of the Apostles. His role was pivotal during a time of growth and need, showcasing the early church's commitment to charity and support.

Traditionally regarded as the nephew of Saint Stephen, the Protomartyr, Prochorus's journey in faith led him to accompany Saint Peter, who ordained him as the bishop of Nicomedia. This connection to two significant apostles highlights his importance in the early church hierarchy.

Another tradition suggests that Prochorus was a companion of Saint John the Apostle, who consecrated him as bishop of Nicomedia in Bithynia. While some modern scholars debate his authorship of the apocryphal Acts of John, which is believed to have been written towards the end of the second century, his legacy remains influential.

Later traditions assert that Prochorus served as the bishop of Antioch, where he ultimately met his martyrdom in the first century. In Orthodox iconography, he is often depicted as a scribe of John the Theologian, further cementing his role in the early Christian narrative.

Prochorus is commemorated alongside three other deacons on July twenty-eighth, a testament to his enduring legacy within the Christian faith.
