Professor Longhair

Henry Roeland Byrd, born on December 19, 1918, and better known as Professor Longhair or simply 'Fess', was a remarkable American musician whose influence on New Orleans blues is undeniable. His career spanned two significant periods: the vibrant era of early rhythm and blues and the revival of traditional jazz that followed the establishment of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1970.

Professor Longhair's piano style is instantly recognizable, characterized by a unique blend of rumba, mambo, and calypso rhythms. Music journalist Tony Russell noted that his vivacious rhumba-rhythmed piano blues and choked singing were too unconventional to achieve mass appeal, yet he profoundly influenced many artists.
