Protagoras

Protagoras, born in four hundred eighty-six BCE, was a prominent pre-Socratic Greek philosopher and a pioneering rhetorical theorist. He is often recognized as one of the sophists by the philosopher Plato, who credited him with establishing the role of the professional sophist in his dialogue titled 'Protagoras'. This recognition highlights Protagoras' significant influence on the development of philosophical thought and rhetoric in ancient Greece.

One of Protagoras' most notable contributions to philosophy is his provocative assertion that 'Of all things the measure is Man.' This statement, which can be interpreted as 'Man is the measure of all things', sparked considerable debate in ancient philosophical circles. While Plato interpreted this to suggest a lack of objective truth, Protagoras intended to convey that individual experiences and histories shape personal judgments and perceptions of truth.

Protagoras' concept of individual relativity challenged the prevailing philosophical doctrines of his time, which emphasized the existence of an objective reality.
