Qaitbay

Qaitbay, the eighteenth Sultan of Egypt from the Burji dynasty, ruled the Mamluk Sultanate from fourteen sixty-eight to fourteen ninety-six. His reign marked a period of stability for the Mamluk state and its economy, as he adeptly navigated the complexities of governance during a time of regional strife.

Born a Circassian, Qaitbay was initially purchased by Sultan Barsbay and later freed by Barsbay's successor, Jaqmaq. His military prowess was evident through his participation in sixteen campaigns, which solidified his reputation as a formidable leader.

During his rule, Qaitbay focused on consolidating the northern borders of the Sultanate, particularly in relation to the Ottoman Empire, following a series of conflicts between fourteen eighty-five and fourteen ninety-one. He also fostered trade relations with various contemporary polities, enhancing the economic landscape of the region.

In addition to his political and military achievements, Qaitbay was a notable patron of architecture. He commissioned numerous building projects across significant cities such as Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Alexandria, and throughout Cairo. His commitment to religious works was evident through the endowment of waqfs, reflecting his deep piety and dedication to the cultural heritage of the Mamluk Sultanate.
