Qiu Xiaolong

Qiu Xiaolong, born in Shanghai in nineteen fifty-three, is a distinguished Chinese American writer, poet, translator, and literary critic. His journey to the United States began in nineteen eighty-eight, initially intended for research on T. S. Eliot. However, the events surrounding the Tiananmen Square protests in nineteen eighty-nine led him to remain in the U.S., where he has since made significant contributions to literature.

As an accomplished novelist, Qiu is best known for his Inspector Chen Cao series, which includes thirteen crime-thriller and mystery novels. His debut novel, Death of a Red Heroine, garnered the prestigious Anthony Award for best first novel in two thousand one. The series features Chief Inspector Chen Cao, a unique character who not only solves crimes but also expresses his thoughts through poetry, alongside his sidekick Detective Yu.

Qiu's works delve into the complexities of modern China, intertwining elements of Chinese culture, cuisine, architecture, history, and philosophy with the intricacies of criminal procedure. Each novel is enriched with quotes from both ancient and contemporary poets, including Confucius, providing readers with a profound insight into the societal landscape of China.
