Qurratulain Hyder

Qurratulain Hyder, born on January twentieth, nineteen twenty-seven, was a luminary in the realm of Urdu literature, renowned for her profound contributions as a novelist, short story writer, academic, and journalist. Her most celebrated work, Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire), published in nineteen fifty-nine, is a sweeping narrative that traverses the historical landscape from the fourth century BC to the post-partition era of India, establishing her as a pivotal figure in Urdu literary history.

Affectionately known as 'Ainee Apa' by her peers and admirers, she hailed from a literary lineage. Her father, Syed Sajjad Haider Yaldram, was a trailblazer in Urdu short story writing, while her mother, Nazar Zahra, also a novelist, initially wrote under the pseudonym Bint-i-Nazrul Baqar. Nazar was a protégé of the esteemed Muhammadi Begam and her husband, Syed Mumtaz Ali, who played a significant role in publishing her first novel.

Hyder's literary prowess earned her numerous accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu in nineteen sixty-seven for her collection of short stories, Patjhar Ki Awaz. She was later honored with the prestigious Jnanpith Award in nineteen eighty-nine for Akhire Shab Ke Humsafar, and in nineteen ninety-four, she received the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest recognition from India's National Academy of Letters. Her contributions to literature were further acknowledged when she was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in two thousand five.
