R. M. Hare

Richard Mervyn Hare, commonly known as R. M. Hare, was born on March twelfth, nineteen nineteen, and became a prominent figure in moral philosophy. He served as White's Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford from nineteen sixty-six until nineteen eighty-three, a position that solidified his influence in the field. Following his tenure at Oxford, Hare shared his expertise at the University of Florida, where he continued to shape the minds of future philosophers.

Hare is particularly renowned for his development of prescriptivism, a meta-ethical theory that emphasizes the formal features of moral discourse. His work in this area has had a lasting impact on moral philosophy, especially during the latter half of the twentieth century. Additionally, he advocated for preference utilitarianism, which is grounded in his prescriptivist views, further contributing to the discourse on ethics.

Throughout his career, Hare mentored several notable philosophers, including Brian McGuinness, John Lucas, and Bernard Williams, who have made significant contributions to the field. His legacy also extends to his family, as his son, John E. Hare, followed in his footsteps to become a philosopher as well. Furthermore, Peter Singer, a key figure in the animal liberation movement, has acknowledged the influence of Hare's work on his own philosophical development.
