R. Norris Williams

Richard "Dick" Norris Williams II, known as R. Norris Williams, was born on January 29, 1891, and became a prominent figure in American tennis. His remarkable career was marked by significant achievements, including winning the U.S. National Tennis Championships in men's singles in both 1914 and 1916. His prowess on the court earned him the title of U.S. No. 1 player for the year 1916, as recognized by the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA).

In addition to his national accolades, Williams also gained international recognition, being ranked world No. 2 in 1914. His contributions to the sport during this era were notable, as he helped elevate the profile of tennis in the United States.

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Williams is also remembered for his harrowing experience as a passenger aboard the RMS Titanic. He survived the tragic sinking of the ship, an event that would forever mark his life story.
