Rachel Reeves, born on February thirteenth, nineteen seventy-nine, is a prominent British economist and politician. She has made history as the first woman to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer since the office's inception over eight hundred years ago. A member of the Labour Party, Reeves has represented Leeds West and Pudsey in Parliament since two thousand ten, following her election during the general election that year.
Raised in Lewisham, Reeves attended Cator Park School for Girls before pursuing her studies in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at the University of Oxford. She later earned a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics. Her political journey began at the age of sixteen when she joined the Labour Party, and she subsequently worked at the Bank of England. After two unsuccessful attempts to enter the House of Commons, she secured her seat in Leeds West.
Reeves quickly rose through the ranks of the Labour Party, endorsing Ed Miliband in the two thousand ten leadership election and taking on various shadow ministerial roles. She served as Shadow Pensions Minister, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. After the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader in two thousand fifteen, she returned to the backbenches but continued to influence policy as chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee from two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty.
In two thousand twenty, Reeves returned to the shadow cabinet under Keir Starmer, eventually becoming Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. Her tenure was marked by a commitment to modern supply-side economics, advocating for policies aimed at enhancing economic growth while addressing inequality and environmental concerns. Following Labour's victory in the two thousand twenty-four general election, she was appointed Chancellor, where she implemented significant changes, including the establishment of the National Wealth Fund and the introduction of substantial tax increases in her budgets.
