Radama II

Radama II, born on September twenty-third, eighteen twenty-nine, was the son and heir of Queen Ranavalona I, ruling the Kingdom of Madagascar from eighteen sixty-one to eighteen sixty-three. His reign, though short-lived, marked a significant turning point in Madagascar's history. Under the long and often oppressive rule of his mother, Madagascar had managed to maintain its cultural and political independence from European colonial ambitions.

In stark contrast to Queen Ranavalona's isolationist policies, Radama II embraced a pro-European stance, allowing for religious freedom and re-establishing connections with European nations. This shift was encapsulated in the Lambert Charter, a secret agreement he made in eighteen fifty-five with French entrepreneur Joseph-François Lambert, granting the French exclusive rights to exploit vast tracts of Madagascar's resources. This agreement would later play a crucial role in France's eventual claim over Madagascar as a protectorate and, subsequently, a colony.

Radama's ambitious reforms, however, alienated his ministers, leading to a coup orchestrated by his prime minister, Rainivoninahitriniony. On May twelfth, eighteen sixty-three, Radama II was strangled, and his wife, Rabodo, ascended the throne under the name Rasoherina, with the stipulation that future rulers would govern in collaboration with the Hova class. Officially, it was reported that Radama had committed suicide, and he was buried in a tomb in Ilafy.

Despite the official narrative, rumors circulated, fueled by prominent foreigners like Jean Laborde and William Ellis, suggesting that Radama had survived the assassination attempt and lived in obscurity near Lake Kinkony. This intriguing possibility has led to speculation that he may have lived to an old age, plotting a return to power.
